It's episode 31.

00:00:11:10 - 00:00:13:17

I'm your co-host, Mike Parsons.

00:00:13:17 - 00:00:15:13

And as always, I'm joined by Mr.

00:00:15:13 - 00:00:16:22

Mark Pearson Freelon.

00:00:16:22 - 00:00:20:02

Good morning, Mark. Hey,

good morning, Mike.

00:00:20:03 - 00:00:22:03

Good morning, listeners.

Good morning, viewers.

00:00:23:16 - 00:00:24:21

Good morning, everybody.

00:00:24:21 - 00:00:26:15

Else that perhaps I've forgotten about.

00:00:26:15 - 00:00:30:05

Welcome to episode 31 of the Moon

00:00:30:05 - 00:00:33:10

Shot Master series and boy Mike.

00:00:34:07 - 00:00:38:10

boy, do we have a good topic in line

and in mind today.

00:00:38:13 - 00:00:40:14

So the Moon Shots Master series.

00:00:40:14 - 00:00:42:09

Mark, you say a good topic.

00:00:42:09 - 00:00:45:09

I might say a somewhat joyful topic.

00:00:46:00 - 00:00:49:09

It's a joyful topic

and it's also one that I would nowadays

00:00:49:09 - 00:00:54:06

regard as an essential topic,

and that is the topic of ikigai.

00:00:54:15 - 00:00:58:18

Ikigai the secret perhaps

to finding your life's passion.

00:00:58:24 - 00:01:03:02

The tool in the armory

to help you feel satisfied each day.

00:01:03:10 - 00:01:06:02

The framework in which to utilize

00:01:06:02 - 00:01:09:08

and try to understand yourself

a little bit better.

00:01:09:15 - 00:01:10:17

Mike We're obviously going

00:01:10:17 - 00:01:14:13

to sell the concept of Ikigai

a little bit during today's show.

00:01:14:13 - 00:01:17:15

We're going to explore,

we're going to test ourselves.

00:01:17:18 - 00:01:20:23

We're going to really immerse

into the world of Ikigai.

00:01:21:04 - 00:01:24:15

But what does it really mean to you

before we get into all the good stuff?

00:01:24:15 - 00:01:26:21

Because I know that you and I

have a pretty passion about it.

00:01:28:04 - 00:01:30:12

So for me, Ikigai is really

00:01:30:12 - 00:01:34:12

another way of kind of figuring out

what you should be doing in life.

00:01:34:12 - 00:01:39:03

And I think this show is a collection

of all the thoughts around

00:01:39:15 - 00:01:42:17

designing your life,

finding purpose and passion.

00:01:43:02 - 00:01:46:15

So this will work really

well as a collection

00:01:46:15 - 00:01:51:06

of thinking that embodies ikigai

for the people who are listening.

00:01:51:06 - 00:01:54:07

For a members who may be feeling

00:01:54:07 - 00:01:57:07

like I'm not really on track.

00:01:57:09 - 00:02:01:07

Maybe you wish

you could feel more fulfilled at work,

00:02:01:07 - 00:02:04:18

more satisfied in your personal life,

or somewhere in between.

00:02:05:01 - 00:02:06:03

Or maybe if you're doing

00:02:06:03 - 00:02:09:17

well across the board,

you just want to a healthy checklist,

00:02:09:23 - 00:02:13:04

a way to check in on how you're doing

and to keep things going.

00:02:13:04 - 00:02:15:13

Well, then, Ikigai is for you.

00:02:15:13 - 00:02:20:10

It's all about finding a framework,

a system,

00:02:20:16 - 00:02:25:17

a method for you to get more out of life

so you're not sitting there going,

00:02:27:01 - 00:02:28:08

I'm so off track.

00:02:28:08 - 00:02:29:08

This is the opposite.

00:02:29:08 - 00:02:30:13

This is all about

00:02:30:13 - 00:02:35:19

I am diligently working towards

what I'm meant to be doing in life.

00:02:35:19 - 00:02:41:09

I found what I meant to do and I'm working

towards it and I have ups and downs,

00:02:41:09 - 00:02:44:24

but I fundamentally know that I'm on track

if you want that feeling.

00:02:45:09 - 00:02:48:09

Mark Ikigai

and this master series is for you.

00:02:49:11 - 00:02:51:03

I mean, what a set up.

00:02:51:03 - 00:02:54:22

Mike, Thank you for sharing those initial

thoughts and Mitchell points of view.

00:02:54:23 - 00:02:56:06

I mean, you're totally right.

00:02:56:06 - 00:02:59:07

I think we've got an action packed

show for our members here today

00:02:59:07 - 00:03:02:15

for all of those who learn

just a little bit more about themselves.

00:03:02:23 - 00:03:05:20

This is going to be the episode for you.

00:03:05:20 - 00:03:09:18

So, Mike, I mean, without further ado,

do you want me to set up the first clip?

00:03:10:01 - 00:03:11:09

I think let's deliver it.

00:03:11:09 - 00:03:14:09

Let's jump into a world of ikigai, Right?

00:03:14:10 - 00:03:14:22

Perfect.

00:03:14:22 - 00:03:15:22

Well, first of all,

00:03:15:22 - 00:03:17:09

there might be some of our members

00:03:17:09 - 00:03:19:15

and listeners out there

who are somewhat familiar

00:03:19:15 - 00:03:23:22

with Ikigai, the secrets, this Japanese

secret to a long and happy life.

00:03:23:22 - 00:03:26:14

I mean, what a perfect summation is that.

00:03:26:14 - 00:03:30:07

Well, let's jump straight in

with the first clip from Hector Garcia.

00:03:30:13 - 00:03:33:13

Hector

Garcia is a great author of a book, Ikigai

00:03:33:17 - 00:03:36:10

The Japanese Secret

to a Long and Happy Life.

00:03:36:10 - 00:03:37:09

And let's hear from him.

00:03:37:09 - 00:03:41:24

Mike, kick us off, kick off the show

today with his philosophy around

00:03:41:24 - 00:03:45:15

why he wrote the book

and his version of a life of purpose.

00:03:46:09 - 00:03:48:18

I found out that no one had written

00:03:49:24 - 00:03:52:05

in a nice way what

00:03:52:05 - 00:03:55:03

all this existentialism is

00:03:55:03 - 00:03:57:13

or what little therapy is like.

00:03:57:13 - 00:04:01:17

There's very good

books by Viktor Frankl, but

00:04:02:19 - 00:04:04:20

you don't have, like,

00:04:04:20 - 00:04:07:11

a book that puts everything together

00:04:07:11 - 00:04:11:04

and these books are starting

to be a little bit obscure

00:04:11:04 - 00:04:14:07

because it's like language from 50

or 60 years ago.

00:04:14:13 - 00:04:16:23

Yeah. So,

00:04:16:23 - 00:04:20:08

yeah, it's Ikigai is like in a way,

00:04:20:08 - 00:04:25:21

it's like existentialism

mixed with Japanese thinking and revised

00:04:25:21 - 00:04:29:04

and Greek popularized

and like popularizers of

00:04:30:00 - 00:04:33:07

and I think that's why it connects

with so many people.

00:04:33:11 - 00:04:41:01

So because we are not giving you

a concrete recipe, this is

00:04:41:01 - 00:04:45:02

we are not telling you

this is how you should live life

00:04:45:02 - 00:04:48:23

or this is like

the matic way of doing things.

00:04:49:05 - 00:04:50:13

This is very Japanese.

00:04:50:13 - 00:04:52:03

Japanese don't tell you like

00:04:53:02 - 00:04:53:18

this.

00:04:53:18 - 00:04:56:18

This is only one way.

00:04:56:18 - 00:04:59:17

If they give you like

00:04:59:17 - 00:05:04:02

a it has traditions

and things to to follow.

00:05:04:02 - 00:05:06:22

But then you have to forge your way.

00:05:06:22 - 00:05:08:22

And that's.

00:05:08:22 - 00:05:12:12

That's what we write with

the guy is like we can

00:05:13:11 - 00:05:16:08

the main tenant

is like also of existentialist.

00:05:16:08 - 00:05:18:15

You can believe whatever you want.

00:05:18:15 - 00:05:21:03

You can believe in one God.

00:05:21:03 - 00:05:25:09

Many gods,

no gods, you can believe in the afterlife.

00:05:26:10 - 00:05:28:14

You can be in any religion

00:05:28:14 - 00:05:31:14

or whatever you want.

00:05:33:00 - 00:05:36:08

But we can all agree that we are now.

00:05:37:13 - 00:05:39:15

You are me. We are alive and talking here.

00:05:39:15 - 00:05:42:15

We can agree on that.

That's probably true.

00:05:42:21 - 00:05:44:10

And we were born.

00:05:44:10 - 00:05:47:10

We were born

at some points right in the past

00:05:48:12 - 00:05:52:17

and in the future

we will probably we will probably die.

00:05:52:22 - 00:05:54:03

Right.

00:05:54:03 - 00:05:56:19

So we have we have this

00:05:56:19 - 00:05:59:07

time here in planet Earth.

00:06:00:07 - 00:06:01:11

And we can all

00:06:01:11 - 00:06:05:15

agree what happens after and before

and maybe we can disagree.

00:06:05:15 - 00:06:09:21

And it's like we've been discussing these

for thousands of years,

00:06:10:17 - 00:06:13:17

but while we are alive,

00:06:14:01 - 00:06:16:24

we can agree that

00:06:16:24 - 00:06:21:10

that we should aim to have an aim to

to lead a good life.

00:06:21:10 - 00:06:22:15

Right.

00:06:22:15 - 00:06:25:23

And there might be unfortunate events.

00:06:26:00 - 00:06:29:03

And in good events it will depend.

00:06:29:13 - 00:06:33:18

We will have ups and downs

and through all our life

00:06:34:05 - 00:06:39:07

we should aim to to have the most purpose

that's possible.

00:06:40:08 - 00:06:43:16

And that's where the idea of it is.

00:06:43:16 - 00:06:49:05

Like, you have to

you have to lead a life of purpose

00:06:49:11 - 00:06:53:05

to do that,

to make the best of your time here.

00:06:53:22 - 00:06:59:24

So that that's the and that's

very ingrained in Japanese culture.

00:07:00:00 - 00:07:03:00

That's kind of my game. They use the word

00:07:04:05 - 00:07:04:17

they don't

00:07:04:17 - 00:07:07:17

have a philosophy person,

but they live in this way.

00:07:08:14 - 00:07:12:11

They live in and they live okay,

This is what is worthwhile doing today.

00:07:12:22 - 00:07:15:22

This is my Ichigo.

00:07:16:14 - 00:07:18:03

I just write this down.

00:07:18:03 - 00:07:23:04

You know something that Hector said

that make the most of your time here,

00:07:23:19 - 00:07:27:01

and we might disagree

about what happens before

00:07:27:01 - 00:07:30:23

we come into this world,

what happens when we leave this world.

00:07:31:10 - 00:07:32:10

But one thing for sure we know.

00:07:32:10 - 00:07:35:10

We know we're all here at some point

for some time.

00:07:35:10 - 00:07:38:18

And I think what's really nice

00:07:38:22 - 00:07:41:22

and a little bit of the challenge

with Ikigai

00:07:42:03 - 00:07:44:07

is it's not like Ten Commandments.

00:07:44:07 - 00:07:47:07

You must do this, that

00:07:47:24 - 00:07:50:19

or whatever,

but rather here are your options

00:07:50:19 - 00:07:53:19

and you need to find balance,

which is very Japanese as well.

00:07:54:11 - 00:07:57:11

I think the most important thing is

00:07:57:19 - 00:08:00:14

sort of a foundational truth

that we all want, is

00:08:00:14 - 00:08:02:15

we want to live a good life

while we're here.

00:08:02:15 - 00:08:04:06

We want to make the most of what we have.

00:08:04:06 - 00:08:05:07

And I think

00:08:07:02 - 00:08:07:18

all of our

00:08:07:18 - 00:08:11:16

subscribers will encounter moments in life

00:08:12:07 - 00:08:15:18

where they feel like they're not on track

for living a good life.

00:08:16:03 - 00:08:18:24

I've had it. I'm sure you've had it.

00:08:18:24 - 00:08:23:02

And Ikigai is such a powerful

00:08:24:06 - 00:08:26:04

set of tools

00:08:26:04 - 00:08:29:13

to find out where you are

and to define where you want to go.

00:08:30:01 - 00:08:35:00

And you can pick and mix

you can take what you like.

00:08:35:16 - 00:08:38:00

It's not overly prescriptive

00:08:38:00 - 00:08:43:07

and that's why it deserves a master

series, because we need to delve into it

00:08:43:20 - 00:08:47:22

to help you get a sense of ikigai,

how to apply it,

00:08:47:22 - 00:08:51:21

because, you know, we hear about purpose

and, you know,

00:08:51:21 - 00:08:58:03

we all got very inspired with Simon Sinek,

who brought us this idea of why ask why?

00:08:58:03 - 00:08:58:20

Why am I here?

00:08:58:20 - 00:08:59:09

What's your purpose?

00:08:59:09 - 00:09:02:08

People don't buy what you do that

by why you do it right.

00:09:02:08 - 00:09:03:19

And so we're all like

00:09:03:19 - 00:09:06:22

starting to get into this

why thing for the last ten years or so.

00:09:07:06 - 00:09:11:02

But the reality is

that Ikigai gets into the how and why.

00:09:11:18 - 00:09:15:11

So it's a very nice interplay

with great books

00:09:15:11 - 00:09:18:15

like Design Your Life

from the guys at Stanford.

00:09:18:24 - 00:09:23:13

It really plays into people who are trying

to chart a sense of purpose,

00:09:23:13 - 00:09:29:17

but also intersect it with passion

to how you want to live it.

00:09:29:17 - 00:09:34:15

It's really the middleware of the life

operating system.

00:09:35:01 - 00:09:38:01

There's lots of good stuff

and we only get really deep into it.

00:09:38:14 - 00:09:41:08

But I think fundamentally

00:09:41:08 - 00:09:44:01

it's about living a good life.

00:09:44:01 - 00:09:47:24

It's about a checklist

by which you can say,

00:09:49:24 - 00:09:50:22

you know, I

00:09:50:22 - 00:09:53:22

don't feel like I'm totally on track.

00:09:54:07 - 00:09:56:05

How could I review?

00:09:56:05 - 00:09:58:23

How could I do

a little check in on my life?

00:09:58:23 - 00:10:00:24

How could I review myself?

00:10:00:24 - 00:10:03:22

And the reason that you want to do

that is if you can

00:10:03:22 - 00:10:06:20

if you can get that right,

then you are living your purpose.

00:10:06:20 - 00:10:08:13

You might enjoy some joy

00:10:08:13 - 00:10:11:13

or you might get a kind of a flow state

in the work that you do.

00:10:12:07 - 00:10:17:19

But the key thing is

this is a tool for people who feel like

00:10:17:19 - 00:10:22:04

they want to achieve a higher level

of satisfaction and fulfillment in life,

00:10:22:12 - 00:10:25:17

which is the archetypical moon shot

listen to, by the way.

00:10:26:01 - 00:10:31:06

So we got a small hundred

thousand people that tune in every month.

00:10:31:06 - 00:10:35:09

And I bet you a lot of them are like,

I want to achieve

00:10:35:09 - 00:10:38:09

more satisfaction, fulfillment and joy.

00:10:38:13 - 00:10:41:16

And that's starting with using tools

like Ikigai

00:10:41:16 - 00:10:44:16

to unlock your purpose,

to get your flow state going.

00:10:44:24 - 00:10:47:12

And it's not always easy.

00:10:47:12 - 00:10:51:09

But first, sure,

it's a way of breaking down things.

00:10:51:09 - 00:10:55:11

And we always say this, Mark,

I wish we were taught this at school.

00:10:55:11 - 00:10:58:14

Like this was such a missing

bit of the curriculum, wasn't it?

00:10:59:10 - 00:11:02:24

Yeah, It's quite unusual that we run into

00:11:03:00 - 00:11:07:18

such a substantial familiar territory

in our lives.

00:11:07:18 - 00:11:08:16

I think you're right.

00:11:08:16 - 00:11:11:07

There'll be probably the majority of us

00:11:12:08 - 00:11:13:14

who have gone through a

00:11:13:14 - 00:11:17:19

certain moment in life where we think,

Is this what I want to be doing?

00:11:17:19 - 00:11:21:17

This is aligned with who I am,

Is this what I am getting out of bed

00:11:21:19 - 00:11:23:15

in the morning for?

00:11:23:15 - 00:11:27:09

And that level of let's call

it dissatisfaction or questioning,

00:11:27:13 - 00:11:31:02

maybe curiosity,

I think is an essential step

00:11:31:05 - 00:11:34:09

in somebody's

journey to go out and find the right guy.

00:11:34:19 - 00:11:38:04

So I think for all of our members,

if you've ever got to a point

00:11:38:04 - 00:11:40:22

where you are questioning

or thinking about,

00:11:40:22 - 00:11:43:22

you know, what is my purpose,

that's kind of step one, isn't it?

00:11:43:22 - 00:11:45:00

Mike And that's perfect

00:11:45:00 - 00:11:48:03

because it's demonstrating that curiosity

to maybe change.

00:11:48:24 - 00:11:52:02

I do remember watching a clip with Simon

00:11:52:02 - 00:11:55:07

Sinek breaking down purpose why,

00:11:55:19 - 00:11:58:19

and it was very orientated around

pattern recognition.

00:11:59:02 - 00:12:02:06

So looking back in your life

and seeing the things that really brought

00:12:02:06 - 00:12:05:16

you to life, so to speak, you know,

the things that made you really excited.

00:12:06:05 - 00:12:09:03

And I think there's a lot of pattern

recognition

00:12:09:03 - 00:12:12:09

and reflection

that takes place with Ikigai as well.

00:12:12:13 - 00:12:15:06

You know, obviously

we'll dig into the four quadrants and

00:12:15:06 - 00:12:18:03

and a lot of the history of it

later in the show as well.

00:12:18:03 - 00:12:21:11

But the thing that really stood out to me

within that first clip

00:12:21:11 - 00:12:23:07

we heard with Hector,

00:12:23:07 - 00:12:26:07

he referenced Viktor sorry,

he referenced Viktor Frankl

00:12:26:15 - 00:12:29:12

and I'm like, I know that

we've done a show on Viktor Frankl before

00:12:29:12 - 00:12:34:11

within all of our Purpose series on

the Moonshot show,

00:12:34:20 - 00:12:37:17

and I distinctly remember that episode

00:12:37:17 - 00:12:42:10

being orientated around resilience,

being orientated around trying to be

00:12:42:21 - 00:12:47:20

and take ownership of your situation

and rather than thinking,

00:12:47:20 - 00:12:52:07

poor me, this is, this is just something

I have to put up with.

00:12:52:07 - 00:12:56:07

In this case,

Ikigai is a tool to help you change.

00:12:56:13 - 00:12:59:16

Yes, absolutely is something

that you can put into practice.

00:12:59:16 - 00:13:02:10

It's a really practical element, isn't it?

00:13:02:10 - 00:13:05:21

I think you could look at the work

of Viktor Frankl and, you know,

00:13:05:21 - 00:13:10:02

finding the meaning in life

or something else that was mentioned.

00:13:10:07 - 00:13:13:07

Mihai sent me Hi and Flow State.

00:13:13:23 - 00:13:16:17

These are like classics

00:13:16:17 - 00:13:20:21

of self-transformation,

but they're in a fair, fair while ago.

00:13:21:04 - 00:13:24:20

What he guy is, is a very contemporary,

right down to earth

00:13:24:20 - 00:13:26:10

way of saying, Hey, am I on track?

00:13:26:10 - 00:13:27:21

How can I do better?

00:13:27:21 - 00:13:31:10

And I think that's a question

all our members are asking and it's what

00:13:31:10 - 00:13:32:14

we've got ahead of us in the show.

00:13:32:14 - 00:13:35:13

But I think my

everyone's dying for the trumpet.

00:13:35:13 - 00:13:38:13

They are like,

When is he going to get too much trumpet?

00:13:38:13 - 00:13:41:13

So I'll let you nod their head.

00:13:41:13 - 00:13:46:12

Well, like maybe members Havey

when we get to you know,

00:13:47:06 - 00:13:50:04

thinking about filling out, you know,

what am I good at

00:13:50:04 - 00:13:51:16

and maybe what the world needs.

00:13:51:16 - 00:13:54:16

I think giving the trumpet

in the roll call

00:13:54:18 - 00:13:57:15

for the moonshot

members has to be in there for me.

00:13:57:15 - 00:14:01:12

So please, without further ado, guys,

welcome in all of our members,

00:14:01:12 - 00:14:06:07

including Bob, Ken, DMA,

Marjan Konar, Rodrigo Lazar and Sid.

00:14:27:15 - 00:14:31:20

Hot on those heels is always raw

animal and James and Diana Wade,

00:14:31:20 - 00:14:36:18

Christophe, Denice and Laura Smitty,

Cory Gaylor and Bertram, Daniella, Mike,

00:14:36:24 - 00:14:42:14

Fred, Lorenzo, Ola, Andy and Diana.

00:14:42:19 - 00:14:47:23

Guys, thank you so much for being part

of the Moonshots Master series members.

00:14:47:23 - 00:14:49:12

It's amazing to have you with us.

00:14:49:12 - 00:14:54:17

And boy Mike, do we appreciate that

support then we yeah, very grateful

00:14:56:13 - 00:14:59:13

for your support and in return,

00:15:00:05 - 00:15:04:06

we would love to give you now what I think

00:15:04:06 - 00:15:09:21

is the clip of the show,

the ultimate framework of the show.

00:15:09:21 - 00:15:12:08

So Mark, let it written.

00:15:12:08 - 00:15:15:01

Let's dive in without much further

ado, Mike.

00:15:15:01 - 00:15:18:11

We've got a great breakdown coming up

from big ideas and Growing Minds.

00:15:18:14 - 00:15:19:23

Fantastic YouTube channel.

00:15:19:23 - 00:15:22:22

We're going to break down

the essentials of hectic RC book.

00:15:22:22 - 00:15:25:09

We've obviously heard

from the author himself in the first clip,

00:15:25:09 - 00:15:26:23

but let's dive a little bit deeper.

00:15:26:23 - 00:15:28:10

Let's understand the Venn diagram

00:15:28:10 - 00:15:31:07

that a lot of our listeners

and members are probably aware of.

00:15:31:07 - 00:15:34:05

Ikigai is a Japanese concept which roughly

00:15:34:05 - 00:15:37:11

translated, means the happiness of always

being busy.

00:15:37:17 - 00:15:41:05

In the book,

Garcia and Morales investigate Ikigai

00:15:41:05 - 00:15:45:01

and tries to find out exactly what it is

and how you get it.

00:15:45:19 - 00:15:49:11

What they found is that

Ikigai is the place where your passion,

00:15:49:11 - 00:15:53:08

what you love, your mission,

what you contribute, your talent,

00:15:53:12 - 00:15:57:13

what you have to offer the world

and your profession, your livelihood.

00:15:57:18 - 00:15:58:24

Converge.

00:15:58:24 - 00:16:01:21

This book helps you bring together

all of these elements

00:16:01:21 - 00:16:05:16

to have a personal sense

of meaning and enjoy a balanced life.

00:16:06:11 - 00:16:09:18

In a nutshell,

the quickest path to a long and happy life

00:16:09:18 - 00:16:14:11

is to adhere to a particular way of living

based on these ten pieces of wisdom.

00:16:14:24 - 00:16:18:00

Number one, stay active, Don't retire.

00:16:18:10 - 00:16:22:07

An essential aspect of living with Ikigai

is always to stay busy.

00:16:22:11 - 00:16:25:19

It gives your life meaning, helps

you make continuous progress,

00:16:25:19 - 00:16:28:19

and brings

beauty and utility to the world.

00:16:28:23 - 00:16:30:24

Number two, take it slow.

00:16:30:24 - 00:16:32:07

Go with the flow

00:16:32:07 - 00:16:36:00

being in a hurry is inversely proportional

to the quality of your life.

00:16:36:04 - 00:16:39:14

When you leave urgency behind,

life takes on new meaning,

00:16:39:21 - 00:16:43:06

as the old saying goes, slow

and steady wins the race.

00:16:44:04 - 00:16:46:14

Number three don't fill your stomach.

00:16:46:14 - 00:16:49:14

Less is more

when it comes to eating for a long life.

00:16:49:17 - 00:16:52:13

Follow the 80% rule, which says once

00:16:52:13 - 00:16:55:15

you notice, you're almost full

but could still have a little more.

00:16:55:23 - 00:16:57:21

Just stop eating.

00:16:57:21 - 00:17:00:21

Number four nurture your friendships.

00:17:01:02 - 00:17:04:11

Friends are the best medicine

and therefore you need to nurture

00:17:04:11 - 00:17:06:10

and cultivate your relationships.

00:17:06:10 - 00:17:10:08

Confide your worries over a chat, share

the stories that brighten your day.

00:17:10:15 - 00:17:13:02

Ask for advice and have fun together.

00:17:14:04 - 00:17:15:03

Number five

00:17:15:03 - 00:17:18:10

Get in shape to keep your body

running for a long time.

00:17:18:13 - 00:17:19:16

You need to move.

00:17:19:16 - 00:17:22:19

And don't worry if you don't find yourself

in the gym six days a week.

00:17:23:03 - 00:17:25:13

See, studies have shown

that the people who live

00:17:25:13 - 00:17:28:14

the longest are not the ones

who do the most intense exercise,

00:17:28:19 - 00:17:33:06

but rather the ones who stay continuously

active through gentle movement.

00:17:34:00 - 00:17:35:23

Number six Smile.

00:17:35:23 - 00:17:39:19

A cheerful attitude is not only relaxing,

it also helps you make friends.

00:17:39:24 - 00:17:43:11

Of course it's okay to recognize

that things aren't always great,

00:17:43:14 - 00:17:47:10

but we should always strive

to stay positive and remember what a true

00:17:47:10 - 00:17:50:22

privilege it is to be living in a world

so full of possibilities.

00:17:51:14 - 00:17:54:09

Number seven Reconnect with Nature.

00:17:54:09 - 00:17:57:22

Though most people live in cities

these days, human beings are made

00:17:57:22 - 00:17:59:22

to be a part of the natural world.

00:17:59:22 - 00:18:02:22

We should return to

it often to recharge our batteries.

00:18:03:12 - 00:18:07:22

Number eight Give

thanks to your ancestors, to nature,

00:18:07:24 - 00:18:11:00

to your friends and family,

and to everything that brightens

00:18:11:00 - 00:18:14:00

your life

and makes you feel happy to be alive.

00:18:14:00 - 00:18:17:20

Spend a moment each day giving thanks

and you will watch your stockpile

00:18:17:20 - 00:18:19:10

of happiness grow.

00:18:19:10 - 00:18:21:23

Number nine Live in the moment.

00:18:21:23 - 00:18:24:12

Stop regretting the past

and fearing the future.

00:18:24:12 - 00:18:27:00

Today is all you have.

Make the most of it.

00:18:27:00 - 00:18:28:13

Make it worth remembering

00:18:29:16 - 00:18:32:16

number ten Follow your eco guy.

00:18:32:18 - 00:18:36:00

There is a passion inside you,

a unique talent that gives

00:18:36:00 - 00:18:37:23

meaning to your days and drives you

00:18:37:23 - 00:18:40:23

to share the best of yourself

and until the very end,

00:18:41:03 - 00:18:45:18

if you don't know what your ikigai is yet,

your mission is to discover it.

00:18:47:18 - 00:18:48:24

Okay, well,

00:18:48:24 - 00:18:53:24

I mean, a lot of those pieces of advice

00:18:54:00 - 00:18:57:00

that make up the whole ikigai practice,

00:18:57:13 - 00:19:00:08

some of them are uniquely

sort of almost blue

00:19:00:08 - 00:19:03:08

zoned Japanese like only 80%

00:19:03:16 - 00:19:06:19

gentle movement all the time,

00:19:07:04 - 00:19:11:04

not retiring, but always staying active,

all of those kind of things.

00:19:11:04 - 00:19:14:19

And I think if you've

if you've listened to a few moonshots

00:19:15:03 - 00:19:18:01

podcasts, you'll know that that's advice

00:19:18:01 - 00:19:21:12

that we're constantly giving, advice

that we're constantly learning

00:19:21:12 - 00:19:24:17

and is being reaffirmed

by so many different people.

00:19:24:17 - 00:19:26:24

It's not just the Japanese right?

00:19:26:24 - 00:19:31:02

But there are so many mindfulness

well-being practices

00:19:31:17 - 00:19:34:21

that are very in line

00:19:35:23 - 00:19:37:11

with ikigai.

00:19:37:11 - 00:19:41:01

But I want to pick up this discussion,

Mark, with the last point,

00:19:41:02 - 00:19:45:18

which is discovering your ikigai

and what that video does.

00:19:45:18 - 00:19:49:22

It gives you a little snapshot

of a meaningful and full life.

00:19:51:04 - 00:19:54:24

But I think there's a bridge

that needs to be built to those habits

00:19:54:24 - 00:19:58:16

that we saw,

and that is like what is actually ikigai?

00:19:58:16 - 00:20:02:04

What is that point on the map

that you're actually shooting towards?

00:20:02:17 - 00:20:03:15

And this is where I think

00:20:03:15 - 00:20:06:18

a lot of us find ourselves in jobs

that are not satisfying,

00:20:07:20 - 00:20:10:20

where people get into relationships

that are not satisfying

00:20:11:01 - 00:20:14:10

or just being in a funk and saying

life is just not that fulfilling.

00:20:15:05 - 00:20:18:05

So, Mark, what I'd love to do

00:20:18:13 - 00:20:20:13

is I want to go a little bit deeper

00:20:20:13 - 00:20:24:06

and I'm going to

throw up this famous Ikigai

00:20:25:08 - 00:20:28:19

framework and we can like get into this.

00:20:28:19 - 00:20:29:19

All right?

00:20:29:19 - 00:20:32:19

This for many of our

00:20:32:21 - 00:20:35:23

subscribers,

may be something that you've seen

00:20:36:05 - 00:20:37:23

if you've listened to

some of our old shows.

00:20:37:23 - 00:20:40:23

We've definitely referenced this

and had this in show notes.

00:20:41:00 - 00:20:46:10

But my mission, vocation, profession

and passion,

00:20:47:01 - 00:20:50:22

these massive pillars

of a meaningful life,

00:20:50:22 - 00:20:53:22

of a good life of life, full of purpose,

00:20:54:09 - 00:20:56:22

I think we should tear this thing apart.

00:20:56:22 - 00:20:57:21

Let's do this.

00:20:57:21 - 00:20:59:22

Let's really share this

with our listeners.

00:20:59:22 - 00:21:03:06

Because one thing I am

00:21:03:06 - 00:21:06:06

recommending, what we are going to do here

00:21:06:12 - 00:21:10:13

to so many people that I work with

who share with me,

00:21:10:13 - 00:21:14:01

hey feeling a little bit of in a

in a funk, not sure where I'm going.

00:21:14:01 - 00:21:18:12

I'm like, there's one thing that you need

and it's this diagram.

00:21:18:22 - 00:21:21:09

So why don't we start

with your first thoughts?

00:21:21:09 - 00:21:24:14

And when you've used this diagram,

how does this work for you?

00:21:24:21 - 00:21:27:21

What kind of comes out

when you start using this?

00:21:27:24 - 00:21:32:02

Yeah, I think for a lot of our members,

if they haven't tried this before,

00:21:32:06 - 00:21:35:02

you're probably sitting there listening

and watching us thinking,

00:21:35:02 - 00:21:36:19

I don't really know where to start.

00:21:36:19 - 00:21:39:19

You know, there's all these questions that

00:21:39:24 - 00:21:42:18

Mike and Marg,

they're asking me to reflect on my life.

00:21:42:18 - 00:21:45:04

I don't know what I like.

I don't know what the world needs.

00:21:45:04 - 00:21:49:05

Well, the truth is, Mike, I think

a lot of us don't when we first start out.

00:21:49:05 - 00:21:53:15

So the first time when I started

getting into Ikigai and in fact, Mike,

00:21:53:16 - 00:21:54:13

it's a funny story here.

00:21:54:13 - 00:21:58:17

One of our listeners actually reached out

a couple of years ago and I remember

00:21:58:17 - 00:22:02:14

helping them figure out very ikigai

at the time as well.

00:22:03:01 - 00:22:07:14

So it's something that, you know, is

the first step is really just accepting

00:22:07:14 - 00:22:12:12

that you want to try and go and created

for me what I like to start with,

00:22:13:04 - 00:22:16:04

if I'm getting into the practicality

piece of this

00:22:16:08 - 00:22:20:10

is starting and going anti-clockwise

as you got it up on the screen right now.

00:22:20:24 - 00:22:23:10

So I like to focus on

the things that I love

00:22:23:10 - 00:22:27:24

and the tip or the technique

that I utilize when filling this out.

00:22:27:24 - 00:22:30:15

And I was refilling it out

just a couple of hours

00:22:30:15 - 00:22:31:21

before we recorded today.

00:22:31:21 - 00:22:34:01

So it was a little bit fresh for me.

00:22:34:01 - 00:22:37:02

Is I like to come back to it so often.

00:22:37:02 - 00:22:39:06

What I find when I'm going through,

00:22:39:06 - 00:22:42:06

you know, the things that I love into,

you know, what am I good at?

00:22:42:11 - 00:22:43:21

I'll often remember. hang on.

00:22:43:21 - 00:22:45:18

I also really like this.

00:22:45:18 - 00:22:48:21

So when I'm building out

and working with this framework,

00:22:48:21 - 00:22:50:22

I like to keep it quite dynamic.

00:22:50:22 - 00:22:54:12

I like to quite think of it

more as something that you can change.

00:22:54:12 - 00:22:55:10

You can shop.

00:22:55:10 - 00:22:57:18

I don't think you need to set it in cement

straight away.

00:22:57:18 - 00:23:01:14

You can be something that evolves over

time. So.

00:23:02:09 - 00:23:07:02

So for me, Mike, what I love, I'm

happy to get it started if you like.

00:23:07:18 - 00:23:10:18

I really enjoy

and maybe this is unsurprising

00:23:10:18 - 00:23:13:18

to our listeners and viewers,

but I like talking to people.

00:23:13:20 - 00:23:16:11

I like trying to express things.

00:23:16:11 - 00:23:22:18

I like to create space for people

to collaborate and share ideas.

00:23:22:18 - 00:23:25:19

It's certainly something that, you know,

I know that you're aligned with, too.

00:23:26:04 - 00:23:29:12

We like doing what we're doing right now,

which is learning out loud.

00:23:30:06 - 00:23:33:08

That for me

feels something that we've practice

00:23:33:08 - 00:23:36:22

and done so long and it's something

that I know that I really like

00:23:37:05 - 00:23:42:00

because no, once is this ever,

you know, a chore or challenge for me

00:23:42:00 - 00:23:45:00

when I'm looking at a framework like this,

00:23:45:06 - 00:23:48:06

when I have absolute clarity

with something like that,

00:23:48:12 - 00:23:52:13

I know it's true and I know it can go

straight into the Ikigai framework.

00:23:52:17 - 00:23:53:03

Yeah.

00:23:53:03 - 00:23:56:14

So, so let's take this example.

00:23:56:14 - 00:24:00:12

Let's say someone like you is a great

communicator.

00:24:01:00 - 00:24:06:01

A likes has a really strong

social characteristic, likes collaborating

00:24:06:13 - 00:24:10:00

and working with people,

talking and helping people.

00:24:10:10 - 00:24:12:06

So that's what you love to do.

00:24:12:06 - 00:24:15:06

So then you ask yourself, Well,

what does the world need

00:24:15:24 - 00:24:17:24

and what in particular am I good at?

00:24:17:24 - 00:24:19:24

And you might be very good at

00:24:21:22 - 00:24:24:15

marketing and product innovation

00:24:24:15 - 00:24:28:10

and the world needs advisors

and consultants in that space.

00:24:28:14 - 00:24:30:04

And then you ask, well,

00:24:30:04 - 00:24:33:19

how I might be paid for that

from a professional perspective.

00:24:34:08 - 00:24:37:08

And then all of a sudden,

just in that quick little loop,

00:24:37:08 - 00:24:41:18

I just touched on all four quadrants

of the key guy,

00:24:42:03 - 00:24:46:03

which is what do you love to do,

what the world needs,

00:24:46:20 - 00:24:50:01

what can you be paid for

and what are you good at?

00:24:50:09 - 00:24:53:07

Now, what I love about this diagram,

I'm going to move a little bit here

00:24:53:07 - 00:24:57:01

so you can see it

is it actually points out

00:24:57:01 - 00:25:01:03

some situations of what happens

when you're not aligned.

00:25:01:03 - 00:25:03:10

And this is like most of us, right?

00:25:03:10 - 00:25:06:10

So if you've got a lot of passion

00:25:06:10 - 00:25:09:12

and mission,

but not a lot of profession and vocation.

00:25:09:23 - 00:25:10:11

All right.

00:25:10:11 - 00:25:14:00

You're probably feeling delight and

fullness, but you're not making any money,

00:25:15:01 - 00:25:15:15

right?

00:25:15:15 - 00:25:16:06

Yeah.

00:25:16:06 - 00:25:19:17

Let's say you're getting paid

for what the world needs.

00:25:19:17 - 00:25:22:17

You're comfortable,

but you're feeling a bit empty.

00:25:23:01 - 00:25:27:14

Okay, So what's really interesting is

you can start to use this and say, well,

00:25:27:23 - 00:25:31:10

I'm satisfied,

but not feeling of much use.

00:25:31:20 - 00:25:34:11

Well, then you're probably missing

00:25:34:11 - 00:25:37:23

what the world needs in your purpose.

00:25:38:22 - 00:25:44:06

Now, this is so practical,

so straightforward,

00:25:44:06 - 00:25:48:08

and it's not wrapped in

any sort of religious

00:25:48:15 - 00:25:51:15

or social kind of contract.

00:25:51:22 - 00:25:54:22

It's just who you are.

00:25:54:23 - 00:25:57:16

What is the best version of yourself

look like?

00:25:57:16 - 00:26:01:20

And if you can land in the middle of this,

making sure that you're doing stuff

00:26:01:20 - 00:26:05:10

that you're good at doing, stuff

that you actually love to do,

00:26:06:00 - 00:26:10:14

the world actually needs that

and you can be paid for this,

00:26:12:12 - 00:26:12:24

meaning you've

00:26:12:24 - 00:26:15:24

created

value and the value is returned to you.

00:26:16:22 - 00:26:19:22

Then you will be feeling all sense

sorts of

00:26:20:12 - 00:26:23:19

or excitement,

comforts, satisfaction in delight.

00:26:24:22 - 00:26:28:24

Effectively,

you're serving these four parts love,

00:26:28:24 - 00:26:32:10

and they need what you can be paid for

and what you're good at. Now,

00:26:33:15 - 00:26:36:00

we've just presented this framework

00:26:36:00 - 00:26:39:00

super quickly and simply.

00:26:39:11 - 00:26:43:00

If you're into this,

you can actually go really deep.

00:26:43:13 - 00:26:47:10

I would say

as the most practical thing to do.

00:26:47:10 - 00:26:51:00

Next is do a journal

for the next four days

00:26:51:15 - 00:26:54:08

and answer each of these questions.

00:26:54:08 - 00:26:55:16

What are you good at?

00:26:55:16 - 00:26:57:07

What do you love to do?

00:26:57:07 - 00:26:59:08

What does the world need?

What can you be paid for?

00:26:59:08 - 00:27:02:07

And then on the fifth day,

try and bring it all together.

00:27:02:07 - 00:27:05:03

That's a five day exercise boom.

00:27:05:03 - 00:27:07:20

And you're going to catapult your sense,

00:27:07:20 - 00:27:13:02

your understanding of your purpose,

what you're meant to do in this world.

00:27:15:06 - 00:27:15:20

And I

00:27:15:20 - 00:27:19:05

think, Mike,

firstly, what a fantastic invitation.

00:27:19:15 - 00:27:22:20

You know, the fact that there is a tool

and a framework

00:27:23:05 - 00:27:26:16

that exists to help us understand

00:27:26:16 - 00:27:31:16

what our purpose, a reason for being is,

to be honest, it's such a relief,

00:27:31:23 - 00:27:34:17

and I know we've spoken about this

type of thing before,

00:27:34:17 - 00:27:37:17

but it really does

feel like a cheat code.

00:27:37:24 - 00:27:40:24

And again, you know,

we're harking back to the idea that it was

00:27:40:24 - 00:27:46:00

never taught to us at school,

but it is such a valuable entity.

00:27:46:00 - 00:27:49:04

This and I've certainly been doing it

in the background as well.

00:27:49:11 - 00:27:51:03

You know, really reflecting,

00:27:51:03 - 00:27:54:10

thinking about what I've enjoyed

and what I enjoy doing.

00:27:54:21 - 00:27:58:24

And I think this really is an invitation

to all of our members that nowadays

00:27:58:24 - 00:28:03:24

we're in an era that allows us to reflect

maybe a lot more on this sort of stuff.

00:28:04:11 - 00:28:08:10

And it almost, I think is a disservice

when we don't do it.

00:28:08:20 - 00:28:11:20

When you don't take the time

to think about your Ichigo,

00:28:12:09 - 00:28:15:21

it is limiting, I would say, your ability

00:28:15:21 - 00:28:18:21

to really truly have absolute confidence

00:28:19:03 - 00:28:22:10

in what you're doing and whether you know

that you really, really like it or not.

00:28:22:17 - 00:28:24:00

And I'll go one step further.

00:28:24:00 - 00:28:28:21

You don't need to go on some $10,000

Tim Anthony Robbins course

00:28:30:08 - 00:28:30:22

you can get at

00:28:30:22 - 00:28:34:09

your pen and paper

and answer these questions.

00:28:34:24 - 00:28:36:00

Yeah.

00:28:36:00 - 00:28:39:21

And the more you consider them

the more you reflect on them.

00:28:40:06 - 00:28:44:02

You just naturally start

being closer to the target time.

00:28:44:10 - 00:28:46:09

Right? Just think about it.

00:28:46:09 - 00:28:49:09

If let's say you extend my exercise

00:28:49:14 - 00:28:52:20

rather than spending one day

on each question, you spend a week

00:28:52:20 - 00:28:56:01

on each question for a whole week,

you ask yourself, What am I good at?

00:28:56:17 - 00:28:59:07

Then the next week, what do I love to do?

00:28:59:07 - 00:29:00:04

If you imagine that?

00:29:00:04 - 00:29:01:19

And then on the fifth week

after you've answered

00:29:01:19 - 00:29:04:15

all these questions, you say,

What is my ikigai?

00:29:04:15 - 00:29:09:07

You won't be able to like stop yourself

from just being more purposeful.

00:29:10:00 - 00:29:15:12

Yeah, because you attack subconscious

things and you'll bring them out, You'll

00:29:15:12 - 00:29:20:07

articulate them, you'll think about them,

consider them, discuss them, refine them.

00:29:20:15 - 00:29:23:02

I mean, work. Do the work.

00:29:23:02 - 00:29:26:23

This is lecture your work out program

for the gym of purpose.

00:29:27:18 - 00:29:28:11

All right.

00:29:28:11 - 00:29:30:15

I like that. The gym of purpose.

00:29:30:15 - 00:29:32:02

That sounds good.

00:29:32:02 - 00:29:35:16

Well, Mike, I'm

in, and I think our listeners and members

00:29:35:16 - 00:29:40:08

probably are, too, because who wouldn't

want to take ownership of this?

00:29:41:07 - 00:29:42:24

Yeah, because nobody else.

00:29:42:24 - 00:29:45:24

And this is something that I know

we've we've spoken about before

00:29:45:24 - 00:29:47:08

in the show as well.

00:29:47:08 - 00:29:50:08

I think what stands out to me with Ikigai

00:29:50:21 - 00:29:54:10

is the fact

that we can all do it for ourselves.

00:29:54:20 - 00:29:58:05

You don't necessarily

need an expert to do it.

00:29:58:05 - 00:29:59:03

As you just said.

00:29:59:03 - 00:30:01:18

You don't need to even go on

an expensive course.

00:30:01:18 - 00:30:04:14

You in fact can get access to it

for less than a cup of coffee

00:30:04:14 - 00:30:06:17

a month by subscribing to the moonshots.

00:30:06:17 - 00:30:08:14

Hey ho.

00:30:08:14 - 00:30:11:01

Obviously

we know everybody here is already doing.

00:30:11:01 - 00:30:14:11

But my point being, it's

something that all of us have access to

00:30:14:11 - 00:30:17:11

and can do without many barriers.

00:30:17:17 - 00:30:22:08

It just takes a little bit of application

time to reflect, to think about it.

00:30:22:17 - 00:30:26:01

And can you imagine

if you even spent just one day doing it?

00:30:26:07 - 00:30:30:00

Obviously, if you spend a week on each

topic, that would be even more powerful.

00:30:30:15 - 00:30:34:07

Just the alignment

you'd have after just a few days.

00:30:34:15 - 00:30:36:20

It's been spectacular.

00:30:36:20 - 00:30:39:20

Crazy. Well, Mark, we ain't done.

00:30:39:21 - 00:30:42:21

We've got more work to do.

00:30:42:21 - 00:30:46:20

So if our members are curious,

head over to Moonshot Start.

00:30:46:20 - 00:30:51:10

I get the show notes, get all the links,

but in the meantime, we've got more

00:30:51:12 - 00:30:52:14

excited to do.

00:30:53:22 - 00:30:55:08

We do indeed.

00:30:55:08 - 00:30:59:03

Now, for some of our members who are

familiar with the concept of Ikigai,

00:30:59:03 - 00:31:02:16

you'll be aware that there are a couple

of different interpretations of Ikigai.

00:31:02:19 - 00:31:06:06

So so far, specifically with insights

from Hector Garcia,

00:31:06:12 - 00:31:09:03

as well as that great break

down on the ten key steps,

00:31:09:03 - 00:31:11:08

as well as the framework in the Venn

diagram

00:31:11:08 - 00:31:13:11

that we've obviously just shown

all of you.

00:31:13:11 - 00:31:17:01

There's also more of a interpretation

from let's call it back home,

00:31:17:08 - 00:31:20:08

so from Japan, Okinawa and so on.

00:31:20:10 - 00:31:21:20

So the next step

we're actually going to have

00:31:21:20 - 00:31:24:24

and we're going to explore

both sides of Ikigai today.

00:31:25:01 - 00:31:26:19

This is a real master series.

00:31:26:19 - 00:31:28:21

So intentionally going very, very deep.

00:31:28:21 - 00:31:30:21

We're going to hear from James Schramm CO.

00:31:30:21 - 00:31:33:22

He's going to help us understand

that maybe the Venn diagram

00:31:33:22 - 00:31:36:22

is not actually the usage,

the Japanese world at all.

00:31:37:00 - 00:31:40:23

And perhaps everything we've learned of

Ikigai is something slightly wrong.

00:31:41:12 - 00:31:44:17

That diagram

actually came from a presentation

00:31:45:00 - 00:31:48:21

that repurposed the life purpose diagram.

00:31:49:05 - 00:31:53:21

So what most Western is know about ikigai,

myself included, when I made that

00:31:53:21 - 00:31:58:19

first piece of content is we thought

that life purpose diagram is the key guy.

00:31:58:24 - 00:32:01:12

But according to the Japanese, it's not

00:32:03:06 - 00:32:04:08

to understand small.

00:32:04:08 - 00:32:08:15

We have to go

closer to the Japanese source of this.

00:32:08:22 - 00:32:11:23

A lot of people have wondered

how they lived for so long, and that's

00:32:12:04 - 00:32:16:12

one of the reasons that ikigai came

into being as a topic of interest.

00:32:16:14 - 00:32:18:24

So it's a secret is ikigai.

00:32:18:24 - 00:32:20:24

Then what is it really?

00:32:20:24 - 00:32:22:15

What does it actually mean to Japanese?

00:32:22:15 - 00:32:25:13

Not just as Westerners

00:32:25:13 - 00:32:27:24

In Japan, it means so much more.

00:32:27:24 - 00:32:30:18

It means finding joy,

00:32:30:18 - 00:32:33:21

finding passion in the thing that you do.

00:32:33:22 - 00:32:36:22

It's about finding satisfaction

in your daily life.

00:32:37:01 - 00:32:40:07

So if you were to see a Japanese person

practicing Taichi,

00:32:40:18 - 00:32:44:01

now you're getting closer

to what Ichigo means for them.

00:32:44:07 - 00:32:46:20

So for them it's more about satisfaction.

00:32:46:20 - 00:32:51:20

It's not about achieving

grand things, it's not some fabricated

00:32:52:10 - 00:32:55:16

Venn diagram

with an intersecting focal spot.

00:32:55:16 - 00:32:56:19

We've been misled.

00:32:56:19 - 00:33:01:08

It's really a far more

it's really a far deeper emotional thing.

00:33:02:02 - 00:33:06:23

It's a sense of knowing that you're doing

the thing that is right for you.

00:33:07:00 - 00:33:10:08

This means it could apply to a sushi chef,

it could apply

00:33:10:08 - 00:33:14:10

to a kindergarten teacher,

it could apply to a grandmaster of Taichi.

00:33:15:01 - 00:33:17:10

But he guy has a much deeper

00:33:17:10 - 00:33:20:10

meaning than the shallow reference

we've given it.

00:33:20:17 - 00:33:23:14

You know,

even a grandparent can have a key

00:33:23:14 - 00:33:26:13

when they're nurturing their grandchild

and hearing that laughter.

00:33:27:20 - 00:33:29:06

So what's the lesson for us?

00:33:29:06 - 00:33:32:06

I think it's time to rethink our purpose.

00:33:32:07 - 00:33:36:13

And don't be worried about life

changing, world changing goals.

00:33:36:13 - 00:33:39:16

Think more about what's joyful for you.

00:33:39:24 - 00:33:44:20

Where can you lean into the things

that bring you that deep satisfaction?

00:33:45:06 - 00:33:48:06

Even if it wouldn't be impressive

to some of those

00:33:48:14 - 00:33:51:18

hustle bro marketers, it doesn't matter.

00:33:51:21 - 00:33:54:12

It's about what's right for you.

00:33:54:12 - 00:33:56:23

Where's your feeling of Ikigai?

00:33:56:23 - 00:34:00:12

And sometimes joy can be found in

just the simple things I know.

00:34:00:12 - 00:34:04:17

For me it's going for Sir, it's

making a coffee, it's lighting a fire,

00:34:04:17 - 00:34:07:17

it's reading a story to my daughter that,

00:34:08:01 - 00:34:12:12

for me is more satisfying

than making $10 million

00:34:12:13 - 00:34:16:17

a year and scaling

being in the top 500 ink companies.

00:34:16:18 - 00:34:18:09

That stuff doesn't appeal to me.

00:34:18:09 - 00:34:23:09

And maybe you can let go of everyone

else's goals and fund your goals.

00:34:23:19 - 00:34:26:01

And maybe they're simpler

than what you thought.

00:34:26:01 - 00:34:29:15

Happiness doesn't

have to come from big achievements.

00:34:30:03 - 00:34:31:21

It can come from the small things.

00:34:33:09 - 00:34:35:14

This like this is so good.

00:34:35:14 - 00:34:39:12

Like how often do you get to study

00:34:39:12 - 00:34:43:04

something

and look at both sides of the argument?

00:34:43:05 - 00:34:46:04

I mean, this is a total master series

exercise.

00:34:46:04 - 00:34:49:15

What James is really doing for us

that I think

00:34:49:15 - 00:34:53:09

like the way he presented it was

00:34:54:12 - 00:34:59:16

it's a little bit

deliberately rough edged.

00:35:00:14 - 00:35:03:14

And what I mean by that is

00:35:04:23 - 00:35:08:09

I think if you use the Venn diagram

00:35:09:03 - 00:35:12:03

and you are true to yourself

00:35:12:20 - 00:35:15:18

what you love, what you're good at,

00:35:15:18 - 00:35:17:11

you know what makes you feel good?

00:35:17:11 - 00:35:19:20

What can you be paid for?

00:35:19:20 - 00:35:20:24

He's absolutely right.

00:35:20:24 - 00:35:25:08

You shouldn't be dreaming on outcomes

that you think would impress others,

00:35:25:18 - 00:35:29:20

but rather pursuing things

that are true to you.

00:35:30:13 - 00:35:32:07

And I think that's the key thing.

00:35:32:07 - 00:35:35:23

Don't don't fall in

for all those side hustlers.

00:35:37:02 - 00:35:38:06

Don't fall in for be a

00:35:38:06 - 00:35:41:18

millionaire in one month dropshipping this

and that

00:35:43:10 - 00:35:46:14

rather, ask yourself

those important questions.

00:35:46:14 - 00:35:47:21

What do you love?

00:35:47:21 - 00:35:49:09

What are you good at now?

00:35:49:09 - 00:35:54:04

I think when I present my take on

what he just said

00:35:54:16 - 00:35:57:16

is that if you do that,

you will find flow,

00:35:58:01 - 00:36:01:11

joy, you will be present,

you will feel more mindful.

00:36:01:23 - 00:36:06:06

And so I think all of those things

can coexist together.

00:36:06:18 - 00:36:09:18

I think it's all

about the authenticity of saying,

00:36:09:22 - 00:36:13:01

this is what I'm good at

and it really is me.

00:36:13:07 - 00:36:16:12

This is what I love to do

and this really is me.

00:36:16:24 - 00:36:19:24

Because, Mark, I think

00:36:20:16 - 00:36:23:15

we all have these

little moments of clarity where we have

00:36:23:15 - 00:36:26:16

dreams and ambitions of something

that's calling us

00:36:27:02 - 00:36:32:17

that we know is our thing,

but we don't listen to the calling

00:36:33:17 - 00:36:35:12

by using Ikigai.

00:36:35:12 - 00:36:38:12

This is forcing us to confront

00:36:39:03 - 00:36:42:12

these little dreams, hopes and ambitions

that we have

00:36:42:17 - 00:36:46:03

that sometimes you hear people

living for a lifetime saying,

00:36:46:18 - 00:36:49:08

I always wanted to do this,

but I never did it.

00:36:49:08 - 00:36:53:03

Ikigai forces, you go and do it.

00:36:54:14 - 00:36:55:08

I think you're right.

00:36:55:08 - 00:36:59:05

And I think the reason why

we included James

00:36:59:05 - 00:37:02:05

this clip is perhaps not to

00:37:03:03 - 00:37:05:18

explore, you know, challenges

00:37:05:18 - 00:37:09:13

or re interpretations,

I suppose, of the diagram.

00:37:09:13 - 00:37:15:01

I still believe that the diagram

that we showcased earlier is this secret

00:37:15:10 - 00:37:20:05

in order to find and unlock

that passion, that that real drive

00:37:20:15 - 00:37:24:08

sometimes individuals are lucky enough

to know it straight away.

00:37:24:15 - 00:37:26:06

Sometimes there are obviously many

00:37:26:06 - 00:37:30:08

techniques that you can utilize and tools

in order to find that purpose.

00:37:30:12 - 00:37:33:10

You know, for some,

journaling might be enough.

00:37:33:10 - 00:37:37:11

But for somebody like me

who maybe has a lot of things in my mind,

00:37:37:11 - 00:37:41:00

any one time in journaling

sent me one tool to calm that.

00:37:41:14 - 00:37:46:13

I think that what we've seen so far

in the show today is the kind of master

00:37:46:13 - 00:37:49:13

key that helps you or helps all of us

00:37:49:20 - 00:37:52:20

unlock that knowledge around passion.

00:37:52:24 - 00:37:54:07

I think it really is an invitation.

00:37:54:07 - 00:37:58:20

Whether you believe that ikigai

the terminology is specific

00:37:58:20 - 00:38:04:00

to your passion or ikigai is specific

to your reason for being working,

00:38:04:00 - 00:38:07:19

your reason for finding out what you love,

what the world needs, and so on.

00:38:08:13 - 00:38:11:13

I think regardless

of all of those specific,

00:38:11:15 - 00:38:16:08

what I love about this concept is just

how much, like I say, relief, so to speak,

00:38:16:24 - 00:38:20:18

could come with knowing this

and having absolute certainty

00:38:21:01 - 00:38:25:17

and knowledge, because there's been

many times in my career when I'll judge

00:38:26:06 - 00:38:29:17

a situation and I'll think,

I don't really know what to do here.

00:38:30:01 - 00:38:32:01

I don't where my North Star is.

00:38:32:01 - 00:38:35:02

I don't know which way I should lean,

Should I go

00:38:35:02 - 00:38:38:02

towards Action A or action B?

00:38:38:04 - 00:38:42:14

And I think having this passion is kind of

like a cheat code, isn't it?

00:38:42:21 - 00:38:46:20

It's having that master compass

that guide you towards the decision.

00:38:47:03 - 00:38:51:20

And I think, Mike inmates decision

making a lot easier because you know

00:38:51:20 - 00:38:54:20

that you've made the right choice

even before you it made it.

00:38:54:20 - 00:38:59:18

Well, I'll go one further

and say like if you are constantly,

00:39:01:14 - 00:39:04:14

you know, reflecting on what you love,

00:39:05:16 - 00:39:08:18

what you're good at,

and going through those questions,

00:39:09:12 - 00:39:12:17

I think you'll not only find

a more meaningful day,

00:39:13:17 - 00:39:15:18

a week where you feel deeply satisfied.

00:39:15:18 - 00:39:18:05

I think

00:39:18:05 - 00:39:20:04

what it will do is open up

00:39:20:04 - 00:39:23:07

a space that this is all in service of

00:39:23:22 - 00:39:26:24

which is feeling that deep sense of

00:39:28:08 - 00:39:31:11

a good life, a life of purpose,

00:39:31:20 - 00:39:35:02

a life that has true moments of joy.

00:39:35:09 - 00:39:39:12

And I think this clip

is going to bring it all home for us.

00:39:39:22 - 00:39:42:22

So all of this work is for

00:39:43:15 - 00:39:46:10

I mean, we've really delved

into some of those specifics.

00:39:46:10 - 00:39:50:08

Now, I think it's always interesting to

see, like you say, both sides of the coin.

00:39:50:16 - 00:39:55:00

So now, though,

let's hear from Izumi or Chief Tani.

00:39:55:08 - 00:39:59:00

He's going to help us understand

and unveil the truth a little bit further

00:39:59:00 - 00:40:02:00

around the Japanese concept of Ikigai

the mike,

00:40:02:04 - 00:40:05:04

because it's the end of the show

we want to inspire

00:40:05:04 - 00:40:09:19

that's really understand

now how we can all find joy via ikigai.

00:40:09:24 - 00:40:12:24

So you may have read that to find

00:40:13:00 - 00:40:18:00

or to have life

purpose contributions to the society

00:40:18:08 - 00:40:23:23

or the hobbies or the work

that make you feel really crucial.

00:40:24:03 - 00:40:27:21

Yes, they are important,

but they are not ikigai.

00:40:28:12 - 00:40:31:13

For example,

just imagine, okay, you have all that,

00:40:31:13 - 00:40:35:01

everything that you have and starting over

00:40:35:01 - 00:40:38:10

you enjoy and you have family

00:40:38:10 - 00:40:43:04

and you have doing some volunteer work,

making contribution

00:40:43:04 - 00:40:48:21

and the work that you're passionate

and the very key doing that.

00:40:48:21 - 00:40:51:15

And you consider it like your nice book.

00:40:51:15 - 00:40:55:09

But just imagine

you get to take citizenship

00:40:55:23 - 00:41:00:00

and in a hospital for a few months

to be six months and one year.

00:41:00:20 - 00:41:04:01

Then during this time,

what would be your life purpose

00:41:04:15 - 00:41:06:21

or what would it be you die.

00:41:06:21 - 00:41:10:07

Just think about it

when you cannot do anything or when you

00:41:10:07 - 00:41:15:00

when we age like eight years

old, 1900 years old.

00:41:15:07 - 00:41:17:16

So you cannot do all the activities. But

00:41:18:20 - 00:41:21:15

in Japan we have this guy.

00:41:21:15 - 00:41:24:20

So if you die, for example, when we are in

00:41:25:11 - 00:41:28:11

the hospital, when we were sick,

we are still alive

00:41:28:13 - 00:41:31:13

and it is worse living

something was living.

00:41:32:01 - 00:41:35:21

I actually also confronted myself

and I became ill.

00:41:36:09 - 00:41:38:19

And you feel why should you be?

00:41:38:19 - 00:41:41:10

Not purposely, but it just comes

00:41:41:10 - 00:41:44:10

like defeating the fountain

from the inside.

00:41:44:21 - 00:41:48:01

So it means death being on this earth

00:41:48:08 - 00:41:51:08

and sharing compassion

00:41:51:13 - 00:41:54:00

in love with your family, friends,

00:41:54:00 - 00:41:56:22

or even just with just one pet

00:41:56:22 - 00:41:59:19

if you don't have it, anybody else.

00:41:59:19 - 00:42:03:10

So this is some duty,

a feeling that brings

00:42:03:18 - 00:42:08:08

sheer joy,

a relief from just a very simple thing.

00:42:08:13 - 00:42:12:17

It could be your cup of coffee,

it could be in the hospital.

00:42:12:18 - 00:42:15:18

If you cannot have anything,

it could be just

00:42:15:24 - 00:42:18:22

seeing beautiful flower every morning.

00:42:18:22 - 00:42:22:02

So there is some kind of things

that we appreciate.

00:42:22:08 - 00:42:26:01

It's not like having a focus,

but something that we appreciate

00:42:26:04 - 00:42:28:05

and that brings joy.

00:42:28:05 - 00:42:30:03

So that's possible.

00:42:30:03 - 00:42:34:17

Even if I become 100 years old

and if I wake every day

00:42:34:17 - 00:42:39:15

and to see a flower

or to see something beautiful on the table

00:42:39:21 - 00:42:43:17

and or just beside my bed or it's starting

00:42:43:19 - 00:42:47:01

nice fragrance that can be ikigai,

00:42:47:04 - 00:42:51:12

you die also depends on your life stages

as a mother.

00:42:51:24 - 00:42:54:21

Ikigai also is

00:42:54:21 - 00:42:57:07

watching my child, my baby growing up.

00:42:58:07 - 00:43:01:07

It really depends on every part person

00:43:01:15 - 00:43:05:21

and also

which stage you are in in your life.

00:43:06:08 - 00:43:10:00

It's different when your child

and in that if you were a teenager,

00:43:10:00 - 00:43:15:09

if your parents, my parents

or I, you become 100 years old.

00:43:15:12 - 00:43:18:12

Grandparents are like,

maybe at the end of life.

00:43:18:18 - 00:43:22:14

That's nearly

it is something we can also talk

00:43:22:14 - 00:43:27:09

about some physical elements

and a metaphysical material element,

00:43:27:17 - 00:43:31:15

but it is more the oldest known Japanese

meaning of figure.

00:43:31:17 - 00:43:35:14

It's more coming from the higher

spiritual realm.

00:43:36:05 - 00:43:39:15

So something that Pete something brings us

00:43:39:15 - 00:43:42:15

joy, something bringing us this, this.

00:43:42:19 - 00:43:46:05

So it doesn't mean that you need to have

a certain

00:43:46:14 - 00:43:50:07

special passionate hobby or special work.

00:43:50:22 - 00:43:55:18

It's just being a relationship

and just loving every moment.

00:43:55:18 - 00:43:58:18

That's it as well.

And the relationship with

00:44:00:21 - 00:44:02:16

children

00:44:02:16 - 00:44:06:00

or any moments that bring you joy

00:44:06:07 - 00:44:10:09

and relief that is oof!

00:44:10:13 - 00:44:13:16

Okay,

now we elevated things to a higher level

00:44:15:21 - 00:44:16:08

here.

00:44:16:08 - 00:44:19:08

Let me paint you a picture of, I think

00:44:19:15 - 00:44:23:12

the journey we just went on

and ended with in that clip.

00:44:23:12 - 00:44:28:20

Matt I think if you're asking yourself

the full questions

00:44:29:07 - 00:44:32:07

and living to some of those truths

that we heard,

00:44:33:01 - 00:44:35:07

some of those habits,

00:44:35:07 - 00:44:38:07

then this is a way of unlocking

your purpose.

00:44:39:00 - 00:44:42:21

And beyond that purpose, that feeling of

00:44:43:08 - 00:44:46:14

I am contribute,

I am fulfilled and satisfied.

00:44:46:23 - 00:44:49:08

There's a certain joy.

00:44:49:08 - 00:44:52:08

But actually where we went to there

00:44:52:14 - 00:44:54:18

is there is a sense of mind,

00:44:54:18 - 00:44:57:22

fullness and being in the present.

00:44:57:22 - 00:45:02:21

It is totally another alternative path

00:45:03:18 - 00:45:05:22

that gets you to the same place

00:45:05:22 - 00:45:09:14

as Eckhart Tolle

and the Power of Now, right?

00:45:09:14 - 00:45:10:05

Yeah.

00:45:10:05 - 00:45:14:21

What they're talking about

is that through achieving your purpose

00:45:14:24 - 00:45:18:15

this unlocks

a level of satisfaction and fulfillment

00:45:18:15 - 00:45:22:06

that almost gives your subconscious

the capacity

00:45:22:13 - 00:45:26:17

to be totally present in the here

and the now.

00:45:26:17 - 00:45:31:17

So even if you're not capable

of doing all these amazing things

00:45:31:17 - 00:45:36:02

with purpose, delivering on all

those four questions, you can appreciate

00:45:36:02 - 00:45:39:07

the moment in the people that you share,

the moment with,

00:45:39:15 - 00:45:43:04

the place that you're

in, the things that are around you.

00:45:43:04 - 00:45:44:24

You can appreciate those

00:45:46:02 - 00:45:47:03

because

00:45:47:03 - 00:45:50:01

you enjoy that satisfaction,

that fulfillment.

00:45:50:01 - 00:45:53:01

You are totally present

because you've done

00:45:53:07 - 00:45:56:15

the work

of delivering on those full questions.

00:45:56:15 - 00:45:59:15

You have your Ikigai.

00:45:59:17 - 00:46:00:21

How good is that?

00:46:00:21 - 00:46:04:04

Mark Imagine feeling and you know, we've

00:46:04:12 - 00:46:07:22

obviously reflected

on the idea of gratitude,

00:46:08:03 - 00:46:11:03

the idea of reflecting on your situation

being present

00:46:11:19 - 00:46:15:15

across a number of our

master series as well as Moonshot Show.

00:46:16:05 - 00:46:19:20

But isn't it amazing that once again,

we're running into this concept

00:46:19:20 - 00:46:24:12

being one of the secrets

to living a fulfilling and happy life,

00:46:24:24 - 00:46:29:22

something that is totally in our control,

the noticing and having gratitude

00:46:29:22 - 00:46:34:08

for certain situations

no matter what the situation might be.

00:46:34:16 - 00:46:38:08

Being able to look at it in that positive

light and having thanks for it.

00:46:38:16 - 00:46:41:13

Maybe it's the sun,

maybe it's a great cup of coffee.

00:46:41:13 - 00:46:42:21

Or maybe it's any cup of coffee.

00:46:42:21 - 00:46:45:06

Actually, or whether it's just your pet.

00:46:45:06 - 00:46:48:01

All of these small little elements

that we've touched upon

00:46:48:01 - 00:46:51:01

on the show before, partly

maybe in our Happiness series.

00:46:51:11 - 00:46:55:08

It also reminds me, Mike, of Daniel Pink,

you know, the power of regret.

00:46:55:20 - 00:46:58:20

We don't want to get to the end goal,

so to speak.

00:46:59:07 - 00:47:03:09

And as Hector said in that first clip,

we don't know what happens afterwards.

00:47:03:09 - 00:47:05:00

We don't know what happened before.

00:47:05:00 - 00:47:08:15

We can only control,

you know, the life bit when we're awake.

00:47:09:11 - 00:47:13:17

We might as well live that life

full of joy and in doing so,

00:47:13:17 - 00:47:18:03

full of purpose so that we feel content

and happy with everything that we do.

00:47:18:09 - 00:47:23:18

What a great invitation for all of us

today to go out and find joy and find out.

00:47:23:18 - 00:47:26:02

Rickie Guy It's really wonderful.

00:47:27:10 - 00:47:27:22

So much

00:47:27:22 - 00:47:30:22

homework comes out of this

for all of our members.

00:47:30:22 - 00:47:32:02

What comes out of it for?

00:47:32:02 - 00:47:35:14

You Well, you know, Mike,

00:47:35:14 - 00:47:40:07

I think I really gravitated towards

that final clip from Izumi.

00:47:40:17 - 00:47:45:00

You know, I really enjoyed this concept

of drilling in

00:47:45:05 - 00:47:49:08

and finding that joy and well,

maybe not necessarily finding,

00:47:49:08 - 00:47:53:01

but really noticing

is probably a better way of saying it.

00:47:53:10 - 00:47:56:23

Really noticing that joy and having

thanks for it is something that I try

00:47:56:23 - 00:48:00:15

and do and I want to continue doing each

and every day for for you.

00:48:00:17 - 00:48:05:08

Obviously, you could guide so full

of great practical pieces of homework.

00:48:05:16 - 00:48:08:16

What stands out to you, Mike

00:48:09:14 - 00:48:12:18

I just thought what struck me is

00:48:13:06 - 00:48:17:17

as we listen to Izumi, I'm like,

my gosh, this is just like,

00:48:17:23 - 00:48:20:23

how crazy The interesting is that there's

00:48:21:12 - 00:48:24:12

this parallel path to the Power of Now

00:48:24:23 - 00:48:27:09

by Eckhart Tolle and all that

00:48:27:09 - 00:48:30:19

mindfulness practice

that we've studied here.

00:48:30:19 - 00:48:34:02

Again, we haven't yet another tool

to present to our members

00:48:34:02 - 00:48:36:02

and to our listeners

to help them on their way.

00:48:36:02 - 00:48:38:01

So I'm fascinated.

00:48:38:01 - 00:48:41:11

I mean, as in me

really brought it home for me too, so.

00:48:42:17 - 00:48:43:11

Well, it's time

00:48:43:11 - 00:48:47:00

to say thank you to you, Mark,

for pulling together such a great show.

00:48:47:05 - 00:48:51:09

And thank you

especially to you, our members.

00:48:51:23 - 00:48:55:01

This was our master series, our 31st

00:48:55:01 - 00:49:00:05

edition, where we studied Ikigai

and it began with a story from Hector

00:49:00:05 - 00:49:04:11

Garcia, where he was in a rough place

and he needed to pull it all together

00:49:04:17 - 00:49:06:18

to find his life purpose.

00:49:06:18 - 00:49:12:08

And then we were deep to discover

the habits and the very famous Venn

00:49:12:08 - 00:49:16:03

diagram of discovering your own ikigai

in those four big questions.

00:49:16:13 - 00:49:19:13

But we also live beyond

the diagram is joy.

00:49:19:19 - 00:49:24:00

And what Izumi taught us is beyond

the joy is a mindfulness in a presence

00:49:24:10 - 00:49:27:16

that is truly special

and what we all hope to live

00:49:28:02 - 00:49:33:10

so if you come together and learn out

loud here on the Moonshots Master series,

00:49:33:18 - 00:49:37:02

you two will unlock a little bit of joy

and mindfulness.

00:49:37:11 - 00:49:41:00

And that's what we're all about here

on the Moonshots Master series.

00:49:41:07 - 00:49:42:01

That's a wrap
